Now that the Healthcare Blogging Summit 2006 has wrapped up it is time to look back and take stock of what has been accomplished.
Hard to believe, but with the Summit itself, the preparation, the multi-city travel, the meetings around the larger Consumer Health World and the catch-up back at home, I did not have chance to sit down and post anything about all these news for two weeks. Fortunately, there has been plenty of blog coverage by attendees and speakers.
So let me highlight the most notable developments in order:
Before heading to DC I first flew to Boston to give a talk to Massachussetts Health Data Consortium (MHDC) about what healthcare organizations need to do to adapt to the Brave New World of open media: "Blogs and Social Media: Survive and Thrive in the Open Healthcare Revolution". We had a lively interactive discussion, that (so I am told) has led to a few epiphanies for the attendees. We even got some nice coverage by Boston Globe (links below).
Giving Credit Where Credit is Due
Next I want to thank everyone who helped make the innaugural Healthcare Blogging Summit a reality and (as everyone I talked to says) a success. Thanks to all the attendees for their interest and engagement. Thanks to the speakers for willingness to participate and share their expertise. Thanks to Fard, Carol and Toby for breathing life into the program. Special thanks to Skip Brickley, the CEO of Transmarx for providing CHW platform and recognizing the potential of blogs and social media in consumer healthcare. Thanks to his team for tending to the myriad of details key to making a successful conference happen.
Trusted.MD: The BIG Announcement, The Future of This Site
The Summit was a great place to break the news on what has been under development for quite awhile. This site, The Medical Blog Network is being transformed from merely a community of bloggers to a social network for all healthcare stakeholders: consumers, professionals and organizations. "MySpace of Healthcare" is a metaphor and the actual technology will be rolled out step by step:
- New graphic design
- Streamlined navigation & publishing interface
- Enhanced member profiles
- Friending, testimonials and invite features
- Creation and management of private groups
- Migration to the new domain: http://trusted.md
- Rich media publishing (audio, video, etc)
- Advanced application features (to be announced)
Most significantly, all 2007 Transmarx conferences will use Trusted.MD as the blogging platform and will become the first major showcase of this system's use by a healthcare organization. Many of the industry leaders involved in these conferences already made the commitment to follow suit. 2007 will be the year of membership growth.
So what else was covered at the Summit, aside from Trusted.MD?
Too much to recite and being in the midst of it all I found it quite overwhelming. Everyone I talked to was quite satisifed. So instead of me trying to tell you how it went, I will just provide links to all press and blog coverage of the event, by category:

Blogger who Had Harsh Criticism
I would like to again acknowledge Gadfly's concerns and emphasize that the goal of the Summit is not to silence whistleblowers like her, but to help the industry understand how not to get in a mess to begin with. Hope in Las Vegas we will do a better job covering her sort of perspective and I will be posting further thoughts soon.
Last but not least, mark your calendars for 2007 Summits:
- April 30, 2007, Venetian Hotel, Las Vegas, NV
- Sept 17-18, 2007, Hilton Hotel, Chicago, IL
- Dec 3, 2007, Crystal City Hyatt, Washington DC
Vegas program is being defined as we speak and expect it to be announced soon enough. Finally, keep an eye for Trusted.MD actual release as it rolls out of the dry dock step-by-step.
Thanks to everyone again!
What you have done to promote blogging in the healthcare field is fantastic! Dialogue in all directions is the best way to achieve understanding and that is what blogging does.
I only worry that the name of the future site "trusted.md", may discourage those that are not MDs from participating, as the name implies physicians only. Perhaps that is what you want, and if so, fine, but if you are looking to create a more open space where anyone involved in healthcare, from patient to healthcare provider, from traditional to complementary are welcome, you may find it easier to accomplish that with a more open name.
Congratulations on your success!
